Well, it is now a little less than a year until Disney Princess 2012. I am scared, scared sh*tl**ss to be exact. There was something comforting in knowing it was over a year away, but now it's time to get to work in earnest.
One of my friends says a year is plenty of time. Well, maybe plenty of time for a lot of people, but I ain't one of them. I have not run a step since I was in the ninth grade, I have a little more than a hundred pounds to lose to be at my ideal body weight, and thus far can't seem to keep any training efforts consistent. I am now starting feel a bit of pressure, but I think that may be a good thing.
So back to basics:
Walking three times per week for at least 20 min, ideally 30
One long walk per week
Using the Marathoning for Mortals schedule, start working on increasing speed after week 6
Starting week 6, increase speed with the walk/run strategy Galloway teaches
Keep it simple, keep it steady, and away we go!
You're so inspiring to me! A friend and I are planning on doing the race in 2012 and I'm in the exact same boat as you, except you seem to have more of a plan than I do!! How to run 13.1 miles at a 16 minute pace within a year...oh yeah and there's that 100 pounds that I need to lose!!
ReplyDeleteMy sister (who is an avid runner) just convinced me that we should do the 2012 1/2 marathon at Disney as well. I'm just getting started, aiming for my first 5km race this spring. I think I can do it though! Looking forward to following your blog and getting some inspiration from your journey.
ReplyDeleteI have never left a comment for someone I don't know before, but felt compelled to tell you that I think what you're doing is great! I stumbled across your blog in researching the 1/2 marathon myself; I have set a goal to run/walk it in 2012. I have 50+ pounds to lose and am in NO way healthy, so I feel your pain. I am lazy and procrastinating, but determined. You're brave for putting yourself out there, and I want to thank you for adding some much needed inspiration to my journey. We can do it!!
ReplyDeleteGlad I found your blog, I did it this year (Feb 2011), am 100+ overweight and trained for 8 months. I was fairly disappointed in myself, I made it 8.2 miles with an average of 15:43/mile, but although I got professionally fitted for shoes, wore the right socks, and trained in both for 1.5 months, I got a MONSTER blister, which is why I ended up having to stop.
ReplyDeleteI am already planning to run it again....the atmosphere was amazing, it was so much fun, so inpsiring and I cannot wait to do it again....and finish!
You can definitely do this is you keep with it! Gradually adding mileage over time is something your body can adapt to. You would be surprised at how far you will be able to run without too much trouble if you train properly. I started running again seriously in September 2009 and was able to run a hilly half marathon at a respectable pace 9 months later. I started out at about 90 lbs over my ideal weight and lost about 20 while training, so even at 70 lbs it was possible. You can do it!
ReplyDeleteHow's the training coming along? I'm also a slow, overweight runner training for this race.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting ready to turn 44 and haven't run since high school and that was to the lunchroom...I've been on weight watchers. lost 20+ lbs and started Jeff Galloways conditioning program...I am determined to do this...and I know you can also...Be positive..I've never been so set on doing something in my life..Good Luck...
